The origin of the Tarot Cards are not really known. Some say that when the library of Alexandria burned down, those in control of the library created the Tarot; like "Cosmic Flash Cards", so ancient wisdom could be passed on (and also passed off as a game of cards). In Renaissance Italy, one of the earliest decks is a hand-painted by Bonifacio Bembo, dating back to 1450 AD. It was given as a wedding present for the marriage between the Sforza family and the Visconte family of Milano, Italy, hence its' name The Visconte-Sforza deck. One hundred years earlier, in 1300, Church officials burned to death one Maria Visconti, whom a sect of heretics had elected as the first woman Pope. As a matter of fact early versions of the Classic Tarot contains a card titled the Female Pope.
